what is hair longevity?

You’ve certainly heard the word ‘longevity’ being thrown around these days. But what exactly does longevity mean? And how does it connect to your hair? Let’s talk about it!

The short answer: Hair and scalp longevity isn't about stopping aging all together but supporting and protecting the biological functions that stop premature hair aging, keeping your hair healthy, vibrant, and full to minimize shedding, early graying, and scalp aging.

And that’s really just the start. If you want to know more, keep reading…

“While longevity has been at the core of skincare for several years, how this translates to hair and scalp health has been less well understood,” says Dr. Rachael Williams, K18 Senior Hair + Scalp Scientist. We tend to think of negative changes in our hair as random, cruel even, always coming totally out of nowhere. But the reality is, that the future of our hair depends on what we do today (and you have more control than you think, thanks to FutureIQ™ biomimetic hair longevity serum).

Longevity is so much more than those futuristic red light masks and celebrity-approved oxygen chambers. It’s a scientific approach to biological aging, versus a single high-tech tool to improve your appearance. It’s about working preventatively and holistically to preserve your skin, body, and overall health for the years to come. It, of course, feels good to have a great hair day, but longevity is about ensuring your hair will continue looking and feeling good for a very long time (and learning about the signs that it’s starting to struggle).

And even if you don’t consider yourself a wellness guru, thinking about longevity and building it into your routine can have a lot of incredible benefits, especially when it comes to your hair.

what does hair + scalp longevity mean?

Hair and scalp longevity isn't about stopping the natural aging process. It’s about supporting and protecting the biological functions that produce healthy hair so they can continue to function optimally over time.

Every strand of hair grows from a living follicle embedded in the scalp. The hair follicle is a mini-organ that relies on continuous interactions between stem cells, signalling molecules, immune cells and a happy scalp environment to keep hair growing and functioning well.

A healthy follicle + scalp = healthy hair

The biological environment that surrounds follicles influences how hair grows, impacting fiber density, hair thickness and feel. If the environment is not doing so hot, it can lead to shedding, color changes and graying.

How K18 thinks about longevity

“At K18, we view longevity through the lens of the biology of the hair and scalp. Longevity requires supporting the scalp and follicle ecosystem to maintain resilience to daily stressors and the natural changes that occur as we age,” says Dr Williams.

Most traditional haircare focuses on the hair after it has already grown out of the scalp. Longevity shifts this focus to the scalp/follicle and the biological systems responsible for creating each hair fiber before we ever see it sprout. This is especially pertinent for anyone finding some grays or noticing more hair stuck in their shower drain. That feeling of panic is often followed by questions. Why is this happening? Aren’t I too young for this? What can I do about it? And most people aren’t immediately thinking: “It must be my follicles!!”

But the health of our follicles is one way to futureproof hair and maintain not just hair color but density, thickness and resilience. We created FutureIQ™ biomimetic hair longevity serum to address this unique need for preventative care when it comes to our hair. Powered by patent pending MultiVital™ technology, it supports multiple biological pathways at once, helping reduce shedding, delaying the appearance of visible grays, strengthening the scalp barrier, and promoting healthier hair over time.

why should you care about hair longevity?

You’ve likely watched a lot of TikToks about the importance of sunscreen, retinols and high-quality skincare. And maybe you’ve even prioritized investing in skincare that promises to keep your complexion looking great in the long-term. But the concept of applying the same principles to the scalp in order to support hair longevity has not really been a thing (until now!).

We tend to think of haircare as a bunch of different products that deliver immediate, temporary results. But this is not the only way! K18 PEPTIDE PREP™ detox shampoo clears sebum buildup in follicles without stripping hair of essential moisture and lipids, contributing to long-term scalp health.

FutureIQ™ biomimetic hair longevity serum works underneath the surface to fortify our scalp + follicles against the daily stress that eventually leads to early graying + increased shedding.

The bottom line: the scalp is skin. It contains similar protective barrier properties, blood vessels and connective tissue. And just like the rest of our skin, the scalp is exposed to UV rays, pollution, and other environmental aggressors throughout our life.

All these annoying aggressors cause oxidative stress which is a major cause of biological aging. Think: graying, shedding, density loss, flaky scalp, and a harder time growing your hair long.

Over time, the cumulative effects of these exposures can influence barrier integrity, cellular function and the scalp environment in which follicles operate. While the scalp may not develop wrinkles in the same way facial skin does, it’s still aging beneath the surface. The difference is that the consequences appear in the look and feel of your hair, and for many people they appear way sooner than they are ready for.

how can you extend the health of your hair + scalp?

Get ahead of any potential issues before they arise. Preventative care is always better than reactionary care, especially when we know that hair is not just hair. It’s a source of confidence, a part of our identity.

“By the time visible changes such as reduced density, thinning, and gray appear, the biological processes driving those changes may have been compromised for a number of years,” says Dr Williams.

There’s obviously no way to live in a protective bubble and avoid sun, stress, and pollution entirely. Oxidative stress is going to happen no matter what, but it makes a huge difference if you’ve already taken the time to regularly care for your hair, scalp, and follicles. Our biology is inherently resilient; we just need to do what we can to support it!

FutureIQ™ biomimetic hair longevity serum is not just a product. It’s a whole new category of hair + scalp longevity. MultiVital™’s biomimetic peptides, root anchoring complex, and antioxidant system activate together to help reduce the breakdown of root proteins that hold hair in place, help support the signaling involved in melanin synthesis and transport, and amplify the follicle’s natural defenses against oxidative stress to help protect the scalp. As a result, the appearance of grays is delayed, shedding is reduced, and your scalp stays healthier for longer.

“Historically, hair care has focused on cosmetic science and correcting visible problems after they appear. The science of longevity represents a shift in this thinking. Longevity asks how we can better support the biological systems that influence hair quality before visible signs of change occur,” says Dr Williams.
