Humidity and excess moisture in the air are what normally comes to mind when thinking of frizzy hair. According to our in-house chemist + formulation specialist, Meagan, “when the content of water in the air is higher due to increased humidity, water molecules from the atmosphere come into contact with hair much more frequently. Hair is porous — especially chemically-damaged hair — and will try to absorb that moisture. Once it swells, the water molecules can access the keratin chains inside of the hair strand, and then more and more hydrogen bonds will form between keratin and water. This causes hair strands to fold back on themselves, kink up, and bam! The result is the appearance of frizz.” In short, your strands are actually swelling from the excess moisture.

Another common cause of frizzy hair is dryness. Dry hair longs for moisture; once it is exposed, the cuticle will open itself up to grab a drink. This is why naturally curly or wavy hair tends to frizz more easily. These hair types have the tendency to be dry because it is difficult for the natural oils from the scalp to make it to the ends.

Like we mentioned above, overprocessed, damaged hair will often become frizzy due to the high porosity of this hair. Habits like constant heat styling, shampooing too often, and lightening the hair tend to damage hair and lead to frizz.
