In the past few years, GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) has become a major part of the cultural conversation, reshaping everything from wellness routines to beauty concerns. As their use has increased, so too have reports of an unexpected side effect: hair shedding.
In fact, K18 consumer survey found that 48% of people under GLP-1 treatment report experiencing increased shedding.
Beyond that, this has been confirmed in recent user studies reported in the scientific literature. And while that exact number varies depending on the associated weight loss, one thing is clear: it's become a common concern among users.
The good news is that current research suggests GLP-1RA medications aren't directly damaging hair follicles. Instead, scientists believe the shedding is connected to the biological changes associated with a rapid and significant weight loss.
To understand why, let’s first revisit how the hair growth cycle works in the first place.
why does shedding happen?
Hair shedding is a normal part of the hair growth cycle. At any given time, each follicle is moving through a series of phases: growth, transition, rest, and shedding. In a healthy scalp, most follicles are actively growing while a smaller percentage are preparing to shed.
Different factors like severe illness, surgery, stress, restrictive dieting, rapid weight loss, and certain medications can cause a larger-than-normal number of follicles to enter the resting phase at the same time. Several months later, those hairs begin to shed. This process is known as telogen effluvium.

While researchers are still investigating the exact mechanism, the strongest current explanation is that shedding associated with GLP-1RA use is linked to rapid weight loss rather than the medication directly affecting the follicle itself.
Some more context: Hair growth is an energy-intensive process, and it isn’t essential for survival. As a result, the body may deprioritize it during periods of metabolic change, such as weight loss, causing more follicles to enter the resting phase and leading to increased shedding later.
Another component is a change in diet, not just caloric intake. Protein, iron, zinc, essential fatty acids, and other nutrients all help support healthy hair production and may become more difficult to consume in adequate amounts while taking GLP-1RAs.
why timing matters
One of the most important clues is when the shedding begins. Unlike breakage from grooming or chemical service damage which is a much more immediate effect, telogen effluvium tends to appear two to three months after a trigger occurs.
For someone under GLP-1 treatment, that means that when experiencing increased shedding it will show up months after weight loss begins, rather than when treatment starts. This delayed timeline is one reason the connection isn't always obvious.
how to spot GLP-1-related shedding
Unlike some forms of hair loss, GLP-1-related shedding is more likely to present as diffuse shedding across the scalp rather than distinct patches, and the previously mentioned time frame can also offer important context. If you started a GLP-1 treatment several months earlier and have experienced a rapid weight loss and/or had dietary changes that could have caused a nutritional deficiency, you may see this as more hair in the shower drain, your brush, or your ponytail feeling thinner.
